Ask two questions first. How are you paid, and are you a fiduciary? An advisor paid only by you (fee-only) has fewer reasons to steer you toward products. One who earns commissions isn't necessarily worse, but you should know. Check the firm name on the profile: advisors with a large network have the network's tools and its product list; independents have more freedom and fewer resources. Ask what kinds of clients they usually work with. A retiree and a 35-year-old with a young family need different advice. Then ask how often you'll actually hear from them.
