What is a power of attorney?
A power of attorney is a document that gives someone you trust the authority to act on your behalf, such as managing your finances or signing documents. You decide how broad or narrow that authority is and when it takes effect. It's a key part of estate planning because it lets someone step in if you become unable to handle your own affairs. Without one, your family may have to go to court to get that authority.
