What is a grantor?

A grantor is the person who creates a trust and puts assets into it, also called the settlor or trustor. They set the rules for how the trust works, who benefits, and how assets are distributed. With a revocable living trust, the grantor often serves as trustee and beneficiary too while they're alive. The grantor's wishes, written into the trust document, guide everything the trustee does.
