Estate planning·Beneficiaries & heirs

What does per capita mean?

Per capita means dividing an inheritance equally among all the surviving members of a group, by head. If you leave assets per capita to your children and one has died, the remaining shares are split only among the living beneficiaries rather than passing down to the deceased child's kids. It treats everyone in the group equally but doesn't preserve each family branch. It's the opposite approach to per stirpes, so it's worth choosing deliberately.
