Question

Why did I receive a tax form after getting an inheritance?

For context, I received a distribution from an estate and later received or expect to receive a tax form. For context, I am worried that the payment may include taxable income even though the underlying inheritance itself is not income. Before the next filing, I want to be sure the reporting is handled correctly, so a later notice is not the first sign that something was handled incorrectly.

The payment may have carried estate or trust income that must be reported by the beneficiary. For tax reporting purposes, beneficiaries should not assume every check is an inheritance without tax consequences and should wait for final tax reporting forms. The reporting result is sensitive to timing, basis, ownership, beneficiary status, and whether the amount is treated as principal or income. Save the documents that show the transaction history and tax basis, then have a tax professional compare the records with the taxpayer, form, basis, and filing deadline.
