Question

Who should I talk to before using a large inheritance?

The situation is that I recently received an inheritance after losing a close relative. As things stand, the money is still sitting in a bank account while I sort out taxes, debt, retirement savings, and a few near term goals. As things stand, I do not want grief or pressure from family to push me into a fast decision. I am trying to fit this into a broader financial plan rather than treat it as an isolated product or account question.

A financial planner, tax professional, and estate attorney may each address a different part of the decision. As part of the financial analysis, before investing an inheritance, set aside money for near term needs, taxes, debt decisions, and an emergency reserve. A written financial plan should lay out cash flow, time horizon, taxes, liquidity, and downside risk before money is committed.
