Question

What tax deadlines does an executor need to track?

For context, I am administering an estate and there are several possible federal and state filing deadlines. For context, some returns may qualify for extensions, but payments and estimated taxes may have different rules. I want the tax reporting resolved before the next return is completed, so a later notice is not the first sign that something was handled incorrectly.

Create a calendar for federal, state, local, and property filings based on the date of death and estate activity. For tax reporting purposes, tax deadlines in an estate can include final individual returns, fiduciary income tax returns, estate tax returns, gift tax returns, payroll filings, and state forms. Tax consequences can vary with timing, beneficiary status, ownership, basis, and whether the payment is treated as principal or income. Preserve the source documents that support the taxpayer, amount, basis, and timing, then have a tax professional compare the records with the taxpayer, form, basis, and filing deadline.
