Question

What should I do with life insurance proceeds?

At the moment, my spouse died recently and I am trying to separate urgent financial tasks from decisions that can wait. At the moment, there are household bills, insurance proceeds, debts, estate accounts, and changes in income to work through while I am grieving. At the moment, the decision could affect roughly $320,000 in my situation, so I want to compare the tradeoffs instead of using a rule of thumb.

Keep the funds secure while reviewing taxes, debt, income needs, housing, investing, and the purpose the coverage was meant to serve. Within the broader financial plan, cash management after a death includes immediate bills, account access, insurance proceeds, taxes, and the timing of estate distributions. The plan should quantify how cash flow, time horizon, taxes, liquidity, and downside risk fit together before money is committed.
