I hear the word probate all the time but I am not clear on what the process actually does. My family has always talked about probate as if it means the government takes control of everything after a death. Could you explain in plain language what the probate court is deciding, what the executor is responsible for, and how debts, taxes, property transfers, and beneficiary distributions fit into the process?
