Question

What is a required minimum distribution?

For context, I am approaching the age when required distributions matter for at least one retirement account. For context, I do not need all of the money for current expenses and am trying to understand the rules before the first deadline arrives. I have read several explanations online, but the examples do not line up with my situation.

It is a minimum amount that must be withdrawn from certain tax deferred retirement accounts under federal rules. For the household plan, required minimum distribution rules determine when many retirement account owners and beneficiaries must withdraw money. The household impact matters more than evaluating this account or product by itself, instead of treating the account or product as a stand alone decision.
