Question

What is a donor advised fund?

As things stand, charitable giving is important to me and I want it to be part of both my financial plan and estate plan. As things stand, most of my wealth is in retirement accounts and appreciated investments rather than cash. Because my spouse or family is affected too, this is not just a single account decision, which makes access to cash, tax effects, and flexibility especially important.

It is a charitable account that may allow a current contribution and later grant recommendations to eligible charities. For this planning decision, charitable planning can involve current gifts, beneficiary designations, donor advised funds, trusts, or bequests. For this planning decision, the method should match the donor's tax position, desired control, timing, and need for income or flexibility.
