Question

What forms are required after inheriting real estate?

As things stand, I inherited real estate and am learning that property tax rules may be separate from federal income and estate tax. As things stand, the home had exemptions or a low assessment while the prior owner was alive. This may involve more than one taxpayer, which could include the deceased person, the estate or trust, and a beneficiary.

A deed, transfer statement, exemption claim, valuation form, or other local filing may be required. How the item is taxed can depend on beneficiary status, basis, timing, ownership, and whether the payment is principal or income. When preparing the return, property tax consequences after death are controlled by state and local law. When preparing the return, federal and state systems are separate, so the executor or beneficiary should check the current rules that apply in AL and any other state connected to the estate.
