Question

What expenses do people forget when planning retirement?

At the moment, I am getting close enough to retirement that the decision no longer feels theoretical. At the moment, I have savings, Social Security, and possibly other income, but I do not know whether the total can support my actual spending for several decades. Right now, the decision could affect roughly $185,000 in my situation, so I want to compare the tradeoffs instead of using a rule of thumb.

Health care, home repairs, taxes, vehicles, family support, travel, and long term care are often underestimated. When the options are compared, retirement readiness depends on expected spending, income sources, savings, taxes, health costs, inflation, and longevity. Within the broader financial plan, a useful analysis tests several scenarios instead of relying on a single account balance target.
