Question

What does own occupation disability insurance mean?

Right now, my income depends on my ability to work, and my employer provides some disability coverage. Right now, I also have savings, but not enough to replace years of income if I could no longer work. Several agents have explained the policy differently, and I need to distinguish what is guaranteed in the contract from what is only projected.

It generally focuses on the ability to perform the duties of a specific occupation, though definitions differ by contract. When evaluating the policy, disability insurance replaces part of earned income when illness or injury prevents work under the policy definition. The actual contract and current values are the right basis for judging the coverage, rather than assuming a sales illustration tells the whole story. The policy terms and current illustration provide the proper baseline for the review, then have a licensed insurance professional provide a written explanation of the relevant guarantees, exclusions, riders, and surrender restrictions.
