What documents should a Veteran keep for funeral planning?

The situation is that a close family member served in the military and wants to organize burial and memorial records before they are needed. The situation is that we want to distinguish VA cemetery benefits from private funeral home costs. I am trying to put this in order ahead of time while there is no emergency and leave enough flexibility for my family if circumstances change later.
