Question

Should I pay off my mortgage after inheriting money?

Right now, I received a moderate inheritance and also have several debts with very different interest rates. Right now, some are high cost credit cards, while others are a mortgage, student loan, or car loan with manageable payments. The part I am trying to resolve is how to compare paying debt with keeping or investing the inheritance.

Consider the mortgage rate, taxes, liquidity, retirement savings, and how much peace of mind debt freedom would provide. Within the broader financial plan, whether to pay debt or invest depends on interest rates, tax treatment, cash reserves, risk tolerance, and the purpose of the money. Within the broader financial plan, paying high cost debt often provides a predictable benefit, while low cost debt may be weighed against other goals.
