Should I name a backup executor?

I know exactly who I want as executor, but I have not named anyone else in case that person dies, becomes ill, moves away, or simply refuses the job. The person I chose is close to my age, and my will could be in place for decades. Is naming a backup executor important even when the first choice is reliable, and what happens if the will has no alternate when the original executor cannot serve?

A successor is important in case the first person dies, declines, lacks capacity, or cannot qualify to serve.
