Question

Should I choose an hourly financial planner?

As things stand, I am comparing several advisory relationships and the fees are quoted in completely different ways. As things stand, one charges a percentage of assets, another charges hourly, and another earns commissions or has investment expenses inside the products. I also have to think about how this decision lands on my spouse or another relative, so liquidity, taxes, and flexibility matter more than they would if I were deciding only for myself.

Hourly advice can work for focused questions or people who want guidance without ongoing investment management. For this planning decision, financial professionals may charge a percentage of assets, a flat fee, an hourly fee, a subscription, commissions, or a combination. Before signing an advisory agreement, check Form CRS or the applicable disclosure documents and confirm registration, and compare the relationship's total dollar cost and conflicts.
