Question

Should couples buy shared long term care benefits?

The situation is that I am comparing ways to insure against future home care, assisted living, or nursing facility costs. The situation is that policy language includes benefit triggers, waiting periods, daily benefits, and possible premium increases. What do I need the insurer to document in writing before I rely on the policy?

A shared feature can increase flexibility, but cost, individual needs, and the total pool should be reviewed. When the contract terms are examined, long term care insurance may help pay for covered care at home, in assisted living, or in a facility when benefit conditions are met. The policy contract and current values should drive the coverage analysis, rather than assuming a sales illustration tells the whole story. Compare side by side the policy's benefit triggers, covered settings, elimination period, inflation protection, premium structure, and insurer strength before buying or replacing coverage.
