Question

Is owning many stocks the same as being diversified?

My account has grown into a long list of stocks and funds, which looks diversified at first glance. Many of the holdings may still be exposed to the same companies, industries, or market risks. Does having more positions actually create diversification, or can a portfolio with many line items still be concentrated?

Not always, because many holdings can still be concentrated in the same industry, company size, or economic risk. Within the broader financial plan, diversification spreads money across different investments so one holding or market segment does not determine the entire outcome. For the household plan, it cannot eliminate market loss, but it can reduce concentration risk when implemented thoughtfully.
