Question

Is every estate distribution tax free?

Right now, I received a distribution from an estate and later received or expect to receive a tax form. Right now, I am worried that the payment may include taxable income even though the underlying inheritance itself is not income. The paperwork is inconsistent about both timing and amount, and I am trying to determine which document should drive the calculation.

No, distributions can include taxable interest, dividends, rent, or other income. For tax reporting purposes, distributions from an estate or trust can include tax free principal, taxable income, or a mix. Tax consequences can vary with timing, ownership, basis, beneficiary status, and whether the payment is principal or income. When preparing the return, federal and state systems are separate, so the executor or beneficiary should check the current rules that apply in MI and any other state connected to the estate.
