Question

Is an accelerated benefit the same as long term care insurance?

The situation is that a life policy includes an accelerated death benefit that may allow access to part of the death benefit during a serious illness. What I am trying to sort out is the tradeoff before relying on it. Which policy terms should I ask the insurer to spell out in writing?

No, although some policies have riders that pay for care under separate terms. When the contract terms are examined, accelerated death benefits may allow an insured person to receive part of the life insurance benefit while living after a qualifying terminal or serious condition. Evaluate the coverage from the written policy and current values, instead of treating a sales presentation as the controlling document. Compare the policy's benefit triggers, covered settings, elimination period, inflation protection, premium structure, and insurer strength before buying or replacing coverage.
