Question

How often should I rebalance my portfolio?

The situation is that my portfolio has grown one investment at a time and now holds several stocks and funds. The situation is that it looks diversified because there are many line items, but I am not sure whether the holdings actually represent different companies, industries, and asset classes. Which records and assumptions should a planner check before giving advice?

Use a consistent schedule or percentage threshold so decisions are driven by the plan rather than market emotion. As part of the financial analysis, diversification spreads money across different investments so one holding or market segment does not determine the entire outcome. This choice makes more sense when it is tested against the rest of the household plan, rather than focusing on the account or product in isolation.
