Question

How much does it cost to bring a body home?

At the moment, my family travels frequently and some relatives live far from the place where they would want final arrangements. I want to understand transportation and planning if someone dies away from home. My relatives do not all agree on the preferred arrangement, and I want to tell the difference between preferences and rules that actually come from law, the cemetery, or the provider.

Cost depends on distance, preparation, container, transportation method, and provider fees. The total price is easier to understand when mandatory services, optional items, merchandise, cemetery costs, and third party fees are broken out instead of bundled. As part of the arrangement review, when a death occurs away from home, arrangements may involve a local funeral provider, transportation permits, airline or ground shipping, receiving services, and coordination with the final provider. Get an itemized list of the provider's charges before agreeing to services, and make sure any claimed requirement is traced to law, cemetery policy, or the provider's own rule before money changes hands.
