Question

How do I give equally when my children need different amounts?

At the moment, I want to help younger family members while I am alive, but I am still responsible for my own retirement and emergency needs. At the moment, the requests range from a home purchase to tuition and other major expenses. At the moment, the decision could affect roughly $110,000 in my situation, so I want to compare the tradeoffs instead of using a rule of thumb.

Equal treatment can mean equal dollars, equal opportunity, or documented differences based on circumstances. Within the broader financial plan, giving money to family can support education, housing, or other goals, but the giver should protect retirement security and consider taxes, fairness, control, and the recipient's financial habits. Within the broader financial plan, a written plan can distinguish a gift from a loan.
