How can I compare two financial advisors?

The situation is that I am interviewing financial advisors and want to make sure the person and firm are legitimate before I move money or sign an advisory agreement. The situation is that the candidates work for different types of firms and use different titles. I am working to fit this into a broader financial plan rather than treat it as an isolated product or account question.
