Question

Does property gifted before death get the same basis treatment?

The situation is that I inherited property that the owner held for many years and the original purchase records are incomplete. The situation is that I may eventually sell the property, so I need to understand which value becomes my tax basis and what records will support it. I want to know what needs to be checked before the return is finalized.

Lifetime gifts generally follow different carryover basis rules, so gifting and inheriting can have different tax outcomes. When the reporting treatment is determined, the federal income tax basis of inherited property is commonly tied to its fair market value at the date of death, though exceptions and alternate valuation rules can apply. For the filing analysis, accurate valuation records are important when the property is later sold. Keep the source paperwork rather than relying only on a summary, and ask a qualified tax professional to check the taxpayer, form, basis, and deadline against those records.
