Question

Does owning property in another state create a separate estate tax issue?

The situation is that the decedent, heirs, and property are connected to different states and the estate may be below the federal threshold. The part I do not want to guess about is this: does owning property in another state create a separate estate tax issue?

When the reporting treatment is determined, federal estate tax and state transfer taxes are separate systems. State tax exposure varies because some states tax estates, some tax certain beneficiaries, and many do not impose either tax. Preserve appraisals, closing statements, account records, tax forms, and distribution schedules with the permanent estate records. Retain the documents that support the dates, amounts, ownership, and basis, and have a CPA, enrolled agent, or tax attorney review who must report it, how basis is determined, which form is used, and when it is due.
