Question

Does naming a trust slow down a life insurance claim?

As things stand, I have a trust in my estate plan and am considering naming it on one or more life insurance policies. As things stand, the trust may be for children or a beneficiary with special needs. My circumstances changed recently, and I am reviewing whether the policy still matches the original need.

The insurer will need the trust information and authorized trustee documents, so accurate records help. As part of the policy review, a trust can be named as life insurance beneficiary to control management, protect minors, coordinate taxes, or provide for special circumstances. Use the written policy and current values to evaluate the coverage, not on a sales summary by itself. Coordinate beneficiary choices with both the estate plan and the insurer's own forms, because the designation on file with the insurer generally controls who receives the policy proceeds.
