Question

Does moving to another state mean I need a new will?

I moved across state lines last year, but my will was signed about six years ago where I previously lived. The beneficiaries and executor are still the people I want, and I have not made any major family changes. I am wondering whether the old will remains valid after a move or whether differences in witness rules, probate procedures, marital rights, or executor requirements make it smarter to sign a new one in my current state.

A properly signed will may remain valid, but state rules on spouses, witnesses, executors, and probate procedures can differ. As part of the legal review, a will should be reviewed after major changes such as marriage, divorce, a birth, a death, a move, a major asset purchase, or a change in relationships. For the issue described here, updating the document is usually safer than writing notes on the old version. Professional guidance becomes more important when family relationships, real estate, taxes, or business interests are involved.
