Does joint ownership always avoid probate?

My spouse and I own our home jointly, and I have a joint bank account with one of my adult children who helps with bills. I have been told joint ownership automatically avoids probate, but I am not sure whether every type of joint title includes a right of survivorship. Could property still end up in probate depending on how the ownership is written, and are there risks in adding someone as a joint owner simply for convenience?

It may avoid probate at the first owner's death, but it can create tax, creditor, control, and family problems during life. In the estate planning context, probate avoidance is usually achieved by coordinating ownership, beneficiary designations, transfer on death tools, and trusts. As part of the legal review, avoiding probate is not the only goal because creditor protection, taxes, control, and family fairness also matter. Retain copies in the place where you keep essential records, and tell the appropriate people where those records are kept.
