Question

Does an estate need a tax return if it earns interest?

Right now, after the death, estate assets continued to earn interest, dividends, rent, and other income. Right now, some of that money stayed in the estate and some may be distributed to beneficiaries. I am trying to reconcile records that show different dates and figures, so I need to know which record actually controls the calculation.

A filing requirement can arise when gross income exceeds the applicable threshold or other rules apply. Federal and state systems are separate, so the executor or beneficiary should check the current rules that apply in ID and any other state connected to the estate. When preparing the return, an estate or trust may need its own income tax return, and distributions can carry taxable income out to beneficiaries on reporting forms. The final tax treatment turns on factors such as timing, beneficiary status, ownership, basis, and whether the payment is treated as principal or income.
