Question

Do retirees still need an emergency fund?

At the moment, my household income is stable most months but there are occasional large expenses and periods when income could fall. At the moment, I have cash, investments, and access to credit, but not all of those resources are equally safe or available during a true emergency. For context, the decision could affect roughly $72,000 in my situation, so I want to compare the tradeoffs instead of using a rule of thumb.

Retirees may need cash for home repairs, medical costs, family support, or market downturns even without employment risk. When the options are compared, an emergency fund is money reserved for unexpected expenses and income interruptions. The right answer comes from looking at the household plan as a whole, rather than focusing on the account or product in isolation.
