Question

Do I pay income tax on an inherited traditional IRA?

For context, I am beneficiary of a retirement account and want to avoid making an irreversible withdrawal or rollover mistake. For context, the account may contain pretax money or Roth money, and the rules may differ for spouses and other beneficiaries. I am working out the reporting before the next filing deadline, rather than first learning about a mistake from a notice.

Taxable distributions from a traditional inherited IRA are generally included in the beneficiary's income. Basis, ownership, beneficiary status, timing, and whether the amount represents principal or income can all change the tax result. For tax reporting purposes, taxable distributions are generally included in income, and deadlines can be costly to miss. For tax reporting purposes, inherited retirement accounts have strict distribution rules, so the beneficiary should confirm the account type and deadlines with the custodian and a qualified tax professional before moving money.
