Question

Can I split an account among several beneficiaries?

I have three adult children and want to divide an investment account equally among them. The account provider lets me list percentages for multiple beneficiaries, which seems simple, but I am unsure what happens if one child dies before me. How should I think about primary beneficiaries, contingent beneficiaries, and per stirpes options when splitting an account?

Many providers allow percentages, but the form should total correctly and address what happens if one beneficiary dies first. In a probate or estate setting, beneficiary designations usually control life insurance, retirement accounts, and payable on death accounts, even when a will says something different. In a probate or estate setting, forms should be reviewed after family changes and should include appropriate contingent beneficiaries. Review the plan after major life changes so the paperwork stays aligned with your current intentions.
