Question

Can I name several contingent beneficiaries?

At the moment, my policy has a primary beneficiary, but I never paid much attention to the backup section. I need clarity on what happens if the primary beneficiary dies first or cannot receive the proceeds. For context, the coverage could affect roughly $320,000 or more for my family, so I am paying close attention to exclusions, beneficiary rules, and what could cause the benefit to be reduced.

Many policies allow multiple backups and percentage shares. For this insurance planning decision, naming backups can prevent the proceeds from defaulting to the estate or another result set by the policy. The contract and current values provide a more reliable picture of the coverage, rather than relying on a sales summary alone. Do not treat the beneficiary form as separate from the estate plan, because the policy generally pays according to the designation on file.
