Question

Can I name different trusts for different policies?

The situation is that I have a trust in my estate plan and am considering naming it on one or more life insurance policies. The situation is that the trust may be for children or a beneficiary with special needs. Which terms or values should I ask the insurer to document in writing?

It is possible, but each designation should be reviewed for consistency, taxes, and administration. When the contract terms are examined, a trust can be named as life insurance beneficiary to control management, protect minors, coordinate taxes, or provide for special circumstances. The controlling information is in the policy contract and current values, not on a sales summary by itself. Beneficiary designations should be checked against the estate plan and the forms held by the insurer, because the designation on file with the insurer generally controls who receives the policy proceeds.
