Can I have a viewing without embalming?

Right now, our family is considering a viewing but would prefer to avoid embalming if it is not necessary. Right now, different providers have given different explanations about when it is required. We are comparing providers and the pricing and rules sound different depending on who explains them, so I want to know what we can verify in writing.

Some funeral homes may offer refrigeration, private identification, or limited viewing options depending on condition and policy. When comparing funeral arrangements, embalming is not automatically required for every funeral. Families get a clearer comparison when required services, optional services, merchandise, cemetery costs, and third party charges are listed separately. Have the provider spell out each charge in writing, then confirm whether a stated requirement is imposed by law, by the cemetery, or only by the provider before you pay for it.
