Question

Can a home equity line replace emergency savings?

The situation is that my household income is stable most months but there are occasional large expenses and periods when income could fall. The situation is that I have cash, investments, and access to credit, but not all of those resources are equally safe or available during a true emergency. Which facts and documents should a planner review before recommending anything?

A credit line may be reduced or unavailable during financial stress, so relying on it alone can be risky. As part of the financial analysis, an emergency fund is money reserved for unexpected expenses and income interruptions. Within the broader financial plan, the appropriate amount depends on job stability, household obligations, insurance, health, and access to other reliable resources.
