Do I need a burial vault?

Not by law. A burial vault is rarely required by any state, but many cemeteries do require some kind of outer container to keep the ground from settling over the grave. So whether you need one really depends on your cemetery's own policy. It is worth asking the cemetery directly what they require, since a vault adds a meaningful amount to the total cost. Some cemeteries accept a less expensive grave liner instead.
