What is a guardianship?

A guardianship is a legal arrangement where a court appoints someone to make personal and care decisions for a person who can't manage on their own, such as a minor child or an incapacitated adult. The guardian handles things like housing, healthcare, and daily welfare. For children, you can name your preferred guardian in your will, though a court still has to approve it. Setting up a guardianship through the courts can be time-consuming and costly.
