Estate planning·Estate & inheritance tax

What does the unified credit mean?

The unified credit is the combined exemption that covers both gift taxes during your life and estate taxes at death under one shared limit. In 2026 that amount is 15 million dollars per person, now permanent. It means gifts you make during life and assets you leave at death draw from the same pool before any tax applies. Because the figure is so high, the vast majority of people never come close to using it up.
