What does joint tenancy mean?

Joint tenancy is a form of co-ownership where two or more people own equal shares of a property with a right of survivorship. When one owner dies, their share automatically passes to the surviving owners and skips probate. It's frequently used by married couples for their home or accounts. The tradeoff is less flexibility, since you can't leave your share to someone else through your will while a joint tenant survives.
