What does intestate mean?

Intestate means dying without a valid will. When that happens, state law steps in and decides who inherits your property through what's called intestate succession. The default order usually favors your spouse and children, then other relatives, and it ignores friends, partners, and charities entirely. Dying intestate takes the decision out of your hands, which is the main reason to write a will.
